An Evening With Black Stone Cherry – 27th November 2016 – Newcastle City Hall

By Gordon Armstrong (G’s Gig Shots)

These guys are at home on any size stage, whether it’s headlining a festival or like the week before this show playing at the Cathouse (Glasgow) birthday party they just love playing. However this latest tour sees them taking on what looked like their most nerve wracking challenge to date – opening up for themselves with a 45 minute acoustic set. For one thing I have no idea how they manage to get Ben Wells to sit for that long he’s usually all over the place from the get go! BUT it works and works really well.

They have a stripped down curtained off stage and loads of moonshine jars filled with tiny lights looking like they are out in the porch with a million fire flies strewn around their instruments and stools. If the guys were nervous about being so “open” it didn’t show and the 8 song set certainly struck a chord with the crowd! Hell or High Water sounded great stripped back but it was The Rambler and Things My Father Said that stood out.

After a short break and a set change the electric set begins and it would seem the sit down just charges them up all the more and they come out all guns blazing for another 18 song set drawing not only from their current Kentucky album and previous releases but also throwing in  George Thorogood, Willie Dixon and Hendrix covers for good measure to honour their heroes! The stage show too is one of the best I’ve seen in a while outside of an arena production, which a lot of bands seem to be forgetting can be an integral part of the gig!

Granted the band aren’t for everyone and that’s fine with them, they know who their fans are and they go out to give them a good show which you can’t really argue with.

I last saw these gents at ArcTanGent Festival in 2014, I remember being really impressed whilst really drunk on evil festival scrumpy. This time around I was sober enough to remember it!

It was a cracking night in The Cluny. Future Horizons and The Physics House Band supporting made for one hell of a lineup and some canny tough acts to follow. Not that it seemed to phase TTT, they were having a ball doing their thing. As were the audience, some very enthusiastic fans in attendance despite the torrential rain and grimness of a wintry Newcastle outside, the party was in full flow inside the venue. A cracking night!

Opening for Dinosaur Jr on their UK tour. The lights were a deep saturated blue, kinda tricky to edit with in post. So black and white it is, which makes the shots all the more dramatic!

DINOSAUR JR. – November 2016 – Glasgow O2 ABC – REVIEW and PHOTOS

DINOSAUR JR. – November 2016 – Glasgow O2 ABC – REVIEW and PHOTOS

Dinosaur Jr.  – 17th November 2016 – Glasgow O2 ABC

I haven’t seen Dinosaur Jr. since 2010 on their UK tour with none-other than Built To Spill. That was the lineup of 90’s indie dreams! I caught J last year on his solo tour and I just had to hit the road and catch the full original lineup.

Dinosaur are a rare breed; a band that have consistently delivered record after record. Each offering is compliments the back catalogue. Proving that reformed bands can be more than just a nostalgia fuelled cash cow.

The reformation seems like yesterday, but actually it’s been over a decade now. In that time they’ve added to a long list of classic songs. ‘Beyond’ from 2007 has now become my favourite LP of theirs. On the night we get a nice dose of each of those. Delving into the past and present, songs from all eras of Dino blasted punters ears.

Bursting into Bulbs of Passion the set gets under way in style, follwoed by The Lung which get’s a great reaction from fans. Time for some new stuff, they throw a couple of bangers from their 2016 album ‘Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not’. ‘Love is’ brings a slower pace and gives Lou Barlow the chance to shine.

The venue was absolutely packed, apparently not sold out, but we could hardly move so it really couldn’t have been far off a sell out.

30 years of Dinosaur and they still pull a loyal audience. Just Like Heaven during encore makes my day.

Photography-wise I did feel like i was battling the lights, but the images I came away with have an ultra gritty look, with lots of black and white loveliness! If I’d have told my teenage self one day I’d get to photo this band I would not have believed it. Think this is my photo highlight of 2016 🙂

LACUNA COIL – November 2016 – Newcastle Riverside – REVIEW and PHOTOS

LACUNA COIL – November 2016 – Newcastle Riverside – REVIEW and PHOTOS

Lacuna Coil – 14th November 2016 – Newcastle Riverside

Lacuna Coil have evaded my radar for some time. I am, as they say, very late to the party. A friend recommended them to me, ‘you ‘REALLY’ need to photo these!’ I’m guilty of not following mainstream musical press, so this band came as a pleasant surprise to me. Visually the band intrigued me. My friend was correct, I NEED to photo these guys. Musically there is something much more appealing than the typical Kerrang cover stars, awaiting to be unraveled.

Arriving at the venue the place was packed out from early doors. Fans were there to see all the bands. Many fans adorning Lacuna t-shirts.

I walked away from the show buzzing, with a huge smile. That was easily one of the most fun shows I’ve ever photoed. I came away with a ridiculous amount of photos. Here’s a “small” selection of them. Lacuna Coil are one of the best live bands touring at the moment. Mark my words and go see them!!!

On tour with Lacuna Coil, first band on and setting the benchmark high for the evening. I arrived just as they launched into their first song. Bludgeoned by old school death metal, heavy, brutal and rather f*$king ace. They poured a lot of energy in to their performance and won a great reaction from the audience. A band to watch out for!!
