Roddy Woomble – 11th October 2018 – Newcastle Cluny
Roddy Woomble returns to Newcastle for a triumphant ‘solo’ gig. He’s joined by the talented multi-instrumentalist; Andrew Mitchell. He jokes that it’s actually a two-piece act, as they both write and record the songs under his name. Since Andrew joined Idlewild the pair seem to have formed a strong creative bond.
Shooting Of local solo act proved a fitting choice for support. Shooting Of, aka Paul Jeans is well established in the region and remarkably this is the first time I’ve seen him live. His traditional song type structures with thought-provoking lyrics. His voice has quite a range, his vocal performance really stood out to me, hugely impressive talent and he gained quite a warm reception from those who’d came down early.
Speaking to Scott Hutchison before his death we talked about influences and how early Idlewild had played a part in guiding Mastersystem grunge/rock sound. He talked so enthusiastically about them, that I went on a bit of a re-visit of the early stuff, and have since found Idlewild’s debut Hope Is Important back in the regular rotation on my hi-fi! Roddy has quite a humble manner, but his back catalogue is truly remarkable, diverse and with that unmistakable voice and phrasing, full of character and metaphorical lyrics, he has become a Scottish institution.
Tonight they offered a really nice set, covering highlights from across his career with a sprinkling of new gems. You Held The World In Your Arms in it’s stripped back form, delighted fans signing along word for word in the front row. Packed with highlights such as Waverley Steps (with its humorous intro!), Little Discourage, Like Caruso and the smash hit that never was; American English. There’s a lot of love in the room, such a great night! Roddy mentioned that a new Idlewild album is done and due out next Spring, hopefully, that’ll bring a full band tour back to Newcastle!
